Ancient Hydroponics Gardening

Many people believe that hydroponics is complicated, but if ancient people could do it, then it should be simple.

In our ancient time also people uses a scientific approach to things.

The study of crop nutrition has been going on for thousands of years. Prehistory tells us that the various gardening experiments has been made by Theophrastus (372-287 BC), while Dioscorides has  written several theories on botany in the first century AD which are still available. So people were well aware of what kind of nutrients needed to grow crops and flowers.

Beginning of hydroponics gardening method can be traced back from ancient China, Egypt and India. King Nebuchadnezzar II built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in 600 BC.

These gardens, famous as one of the seven wonders, were full of plants grown in flowing water. Aztec Indians had a system to increase the collection of ferries in shallow lakes, you can still see some of these floating gardens near Mexico City. Although there is evidence of these ancient systems of water gardening, science experiments, such as Leonardo Da Vinci (who first recorded “The plants need a certain concentration of minerals to grow”) was the first important step towards hydroponics today.

Hydroponics was coined in 1930′s. A container of water quickly becomes deprived of oxygen, and the former had no way to consistently run a pump. Additions of nutrients to the stream just send valuable intermediates fertilizers.

There were traditional systems using floating rafts in ponds. In these systems, the pond receives manure dumped on its human or animal. Sorry, cannot remember the name of this system has been used in Central America and Asia. The rafts act as sponges for water and nutrients, and also provide a dry medium and oxygen for roots.
